Benefits Of Prenatal Massage

Unfortunately, aches and pains are going to come with every pregnancy. Due to the increase in body weight, posture shift, and basic hormone levels, a pregnant woman will often experience headaches, muscular tension, and physical discomfort such as muscular and back pain. Not only does a prenatal massage help to relieve some of those symptoms by easing tension and stress, but it also usually will improve the expectant moms mental attitude and can often change a bad mood quickly.

Although all women have slightly different experiences, the areas that usually need the most attention are the back, shoulders and neck. That being said, there are several benefits to massaging the entire body such as reducing blood pooling in the legs, and relieving tension pains in the head, hands and feet.

Prenatal massage also allows the pregnant woman to emotionally relax as well, which is a great benefit to her overall health since she will often go through bouts of emotional stress during the pregnancy.

There are several way to perform a prenatal massage and ultimately it comes down to whatever makes the expectant mom the most comfortable.  It is very common for the woman to prefer to lie on her side, but there is also accessories that you can get that can make a prenatal massage even more comfortable with more options for her.
There are pillows available that are made specifically to accompany a prenatal massage and allow the expectant mom to lie on her stomach without any danger to the baby.  There are also body pillows made just for pregnant women that make it more comfortable for them to relax on their side.

Massage is usually completely safe, but it is always a good idea to check with your doctor before massaging, apply pressure to the body, etc. It may even be a good idea to have someone at the doctor’s office or hospital show your partner the most effective and safe way to perform a prenatal massage.

Many women will suffer from morning sickness in the first trimester of their pregnancy. For the unlucky ones, it may even last up to 12 weeks.  Since some women can be affected more than others with different levels of symptoms, it is difficult to suggest one miracle cure for all of morning sickness. However, there are many tips that you can keep in a list at the side of your bed in case are one of the ones that are hit hard by it and need some relief.

  • Blood sugar level
    There is a theory that your morning sickness occurs when you wake up because that is the time when your blood sugar level is at it’s lowest.
    It might be a good idea to eat a high protein snack right before bed and then grab a little bite of something each time you wake to go to the bathroom in the middle of the night. It just might be enough to make a difference!
    You might also want to try eating something light before even getting out of bed and then getting out of bed slowly.
  • Is water making things worse?
    Some women complain that drinking water actually makes things worse when suffering from morning sickness. It’s extremely important to stay well-hydrated during pregnancy, but there are a couple alternatives that might do the trick:
    Try to have fruit smoothies made with crushed ice.  You can also try carbonated water that has small amounts of fruit flavoring. Some women have even claimed that drinking ICE COLD water with lemon makes a difference. Then, there’s always tea, but drink decaf.  It doesn’t hurt to try them all, and all the while, you’re staying hydrated.
  • Smelly situations
    Your nose is on high alert in the early stages of pregnancy. All smells, including the bad ones, are unfortunately heightened to an alarming degree. Avoiding nasty smells that are causing nausea is sometimes all that’s needed to stop that regular morning sickness. Sometimes just the kitchen trash, or even morning breath can be enough to trigger it.

How Much Weight Gain Is Normal?

Once you are pregnant, if you’re not already, it’s natural to wonder how much weight you will gain and how hard it will be to get it off. It helps to have an understanding of what normal weight gain means, where it comes from, and why it happens.  It’s best to discuss your own healthy weight gain with your obstetrician or gynecologist, but here is a few general guidelines to give you an idea of the basics.

The range for healthy weight gain is usually somewhere between 15 and 40 pounds depending on your weight at the beginning of your pregnancy. If you’re under the average healthy weight for someone your size, then it would be normal to expect a healthy gain of 25-40 pounds during pregnancy. If you begin your pregnancy overweight, then your doctor may suggest that you try and keep the weight gain down to between 15 and 25 pounds. Keep in min that 6-8 pounds of that is the baby and much of the rest will be amniotic fluid. That being said, you can expect to lose up to 15 pounds with the birth of your baby.

Although you want to limit your weight gain during pregnancy, this is definitely not the time to go on a diet.  However, you also don’t want to fall into the trap of thinking that you need to eat for two.  Whatever you choose to eat, be sure that your getting the necessary amounts of vitamins, minerals and nutrients on a daily basis. It’s extremely important to know that a diet during pregnancy is referred to as what you’re eating and meant to limit weight gain, not to lose weight.

Don’t forget about exercise. Regular activities is great for the baby, even if a workout is a part of your natural routine already. If you are doing strenuous activities and workouts though, it’s best to get your doctor’s advice on what you should and shouldn’t do at different stages of your pregnancy.

Most people don’t realize how common complications during pregnancy is until they decide to get pregnant themselves and start looking into it. Early pregnancy complications can arise (with no fault to anyone) in any woman even if she is perfectly health, and has had perfectly healthy children in the past.

Here are some complications that are common as well as few things to look out for during pregnancy:

Early pregnancy complications that can arise
Once you are pregnant, the first thing you’re going to do is see your obstetrician/gynecologist. You will have an ultrasound done to ensure the pregnancy is advancing as it should and then also have repeated visits to make sure everything is going smoothly.

Two of the most common pregnancy complications early on are:

  • Ectopic pregnancy
    One of the most common complications in pregnancies early on is when the egg is fertilized outside of the womb and begins to develop i the ovary or the fallopian tube. This puts both the fetus and the mother in danger and usually will require surgery. Otherwise, those tubes could burst, creating internal bleeding and sometimes even death.
  • Miscarriage
    There are several complications that can happen in early pregnancy that can cause heavy bleeding and/or result in the baby’s death. These can range from blood clotting, structural problems, infection, or other complications. Sometimes lifestyle choices can have a negative effect on the pregnancy as well such as smoking, alcohol, caffeine, etc.

Higher risks
Although early complications in pregnancy  can happen to anyone,  some women will be at higher risk. Women who are over thirty years old have a higher risk of bearing a child with brith defects compared to those who are under thirty. If you are over thirty five, then you also have an increased risk of high blood pressure, diabetes and other issues. However, today’s technology allows doctors to detect early signs for most of these complications and usually can be treated.

Ultimately, it is good to be aware of these things and consult your doctor on a regular basis durig pregnancy, but not to let it stress you out. Talking with your doctors regularly can usually help ease some of the anxiety or stress you may be feeling, but will also help to ensure that everything is going as planned if you stay up to date with regular appointments and check ups.

Pregnancy is one of the most precious things that can happen to a family. It’s also one of the most anticipated events in a woman’s life with a new life inside of her that needs nourishment and protection. That being said, the woman needs to take care of herself to ensure the health of bother her and the unborn baby during pregnancy.

Here are a few important things to take into consideration during pregnancy that will help keep both mom and baby healthy:

Eat well
Do away with any notion you may have that you now have to eat for two.  If you begin to eat more than you normally would for one person, all you will be doing is causing unnecessary bloating and weight gain. According to researchers, a healthy, pregnant woman only needs to eat between 200 and 300 extra calories a day. If you look into your calorie intake, it’s possible that you’ll find that you’re already consuming those extra calories anyway. A very important note to take here as well is that those extra calories should not be junk food like pie and ice cream with a pickle on the side.

Taking supplements
Your doctor might even tell you to take supplements that contain folic acid before conception to prepare your body. This micro-mineral can help reduce the risk of babies being born with neural defects and is highly recommended.

Say goodbye to your vices
You’re going to have to say goodbye to alcohol, cigarettes, and even caffeine during pregnancy.  Babies who are born from woman who smoke during pregnancy have a higher risk of being porn under weight and have an increased chance of dying from sudden death syndrome compared to babies who are born from non-smokers.

Precautionary prenatal care

Even before you are pregnant, you may want to get prenatal care, advice and tests. Knowing your blood type in case of any conditions that arise during pregnancy is a good idea. Also, you will want to be sure that you are immune to diseases such as rubella and the German measles to protect yourself and your baby.

Exercise
Keeping fit also helps to keep your baby healthy. Regular stretching and walking are usually a great idea, but regardless which type of exercise you choose, be sure to get the ok from your doctor throughout your pregnancy.
